A new trainer to the Club and a new horse for the 2016 flat season. Our new kid on the block (pictured above as a yearling) is a half-sister to our popular sprinter Clouds Rest, who retired to stud last year after a great 2 years of entertainment for her share owners, which included a jaunt to Royal Ascot in her 2 year old season. This filly has been bigger and heavier than Clouds Rest throughout her development as a foal, as is often the case with a mare’s second offspring and her breeder is hopeful she may be able to build on what ‘Clouds’ achieved.
The filly was sent to be broken in, in mid January, so far she has proved really straightforward and professional in what she has been asked to do. Clive is delighted to train another from the family of Gilt Edge Girl, with whom he achieved group 1 success and is really looking forward to the season ahead with her.
Anyone joining this group will be invited to submit their name suggestion for the filly and will also have first preference to renew their interest for her three year old season in 2017. This Group will run until the end of the Flat season in November 2016. A Share in OG 62 is £250.
Sire - Foxwedge
Foxwedge is a first season sire for 2016; this is his first crop of two year olds but so far the early signs for his success as a sire have been extremely positive. He has already had winners in Australia this year, one of which went on to place at listed level. His yearlings were well received at the sales, with one example knocked down for 90,000Gns. Foxwedge himself raced in Australia, a country well known for producing top sprinters. He won several group races competing against the best Australian speed horses and won a group 1 as a three year old, racing against older horses, a notoriously difficult feat for any sprinter to achieve. He is by legendary sprinter sire Fastnet Rock, who sired 3 group one winners in Britain and Ireland last year; Fascinating Rock (Qipco Champion Stakes), Qualify (Investec Oaks) and Diamondsandrubies (Pretty Polly Stakes). Foxwedge in an incredibly good looking horse and it is very exciting to be involved with his first offspring, Whitsbury Manor stud have produced a video about Foxwedge which can be viewed here
Dam - Ahwahnee
Is no stranger to the Club, her first foal was Clouds Rest, who raced for members for two seasons, won three races and amassed more prize money than any Club horse before her. Clouds Rest was extremely popular due to her enthusiasm for racing, she tried very hard in every single race. She showed incredible speed as a two year old and had a lightning fast break from the gate. Her half sister is also bred solely for speed but is much bigger than Clouds Rest, hopefully she will turn out just as strong and wilful as her big sister.
