Interview with Fergal O'Brien
Find out more about Trainer Fergal O'Brien in our exclusive interview with him.
If you weren’t a trainer what would you be?
I'd love to be a farmer. I like being outdoors and working with animals. I like tractors too but I'm pretty useless with them!
Other than horseracing, what is your favourite sport to watch, and to play?
My favourite sport to watch is rugby. I enjoy going to Kingsholm to watch Gloucester.
Your favourite TV programme?
Mrs Brown’s Boys
Favourite food and drink?
Ribeye Steak and J2O
Favourite holiday destination?
Anywhere in Gloucestershire, and Salcombe in Devon
Favourite and least favourite subject at school?
Favourite was geography, least favourite was history
Ideal dinner party guest?
What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?
Endless excuses why I'm always late!
And now for racing…
What attracted you to becoming a racehorse trainer?
I was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I had a fantastic 18 years with Nigel Twiston-Davies but when it was time to move on my friend and business partner Chris Coley was willing to back me.
What is the best horse you have trained?
On ratings it would be Silver Roque and Alvarado so far. Hopefully we have one or two who can better their mark
Your most memorable racing moment?
Training Look In The Mirror to win the Horse And Hound Cup in 2001
How many horses will you have in training this season?
Not enough! 40 I hope.
If you could train any horse, past or present, which would it be and why?
Imperial Commander. He was very uncomplicated and saved all his best work for the track.
Who is your racing hero and why?
My old boss Nigel Twiston Davies would have to figure but I'll go with AP McCoy. He's not only an unbelievable athlete but a really nice bloke too.
What are your hopes and ambitions for the future?
To keep all my owners happy by training as many winners as possible
